Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that the launch of seaplane services by the national airline has opened new opportunities for tourism and business activities in Noonu Velidhoo.
The Minister made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration ceremony marking the commencement of seaplane operations to the island. He said the service was introduced as part of the efforts of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to strengthen sea and air connectivity across the country.
Minister Saeed noted that the seaplane service would bring significant relief to residents, business operators, tourists and visitors, as well as workers travelling to and from the island. He said the affordable ticket price and reduced travel time would greatly ease transportation challenges faced by the community.
Highlighting the importance of the service ahead of the upcoming month of Ramadan, the Minister said Velidhoo is among the islands that handle large volumes of food and goods transportation. He added that the island is also a hub for industrial and business activities within the atoll, making reliable transport links essential.
To facilitate the service, a seaplane platform has been established in Velidhoo, while a dedicated check-in and waiting lounge has also been set up. Check-in for the inaugural flight began at 1:40 p.m., with the first seaplane departing at 2:40 p.m. on Friday.
