The Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme – 1st Batch 2026 has officially commenced in Maniyafushi, according to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. Led by the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) with support from the ministry and the World Bank–funded TransFORM Project, the programme aims to strengthen national capacity in aquaculture and mariculture, promote innovation, and support long-term development of the fisheries sector.
Four basic mariculture training programmes have been conducted over the past two years, training 53 participants to date. The current programme covers a range of mariculture practices, including the cultivation of several fish species and marine organisms, in efforts to diversify the economy, create employment opportunities, and advance sustainable growth in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
