The Maldives Police Service has confirmed the arrest of a Sri Lankan national in connection with the death of Ameen Mia, a Bangladeshi worker who was found dead at a Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) site in Thilafushi.
Police said the incident occurred on 26 January while Ameen Mia was working at a garbage dump site in Thilafushi. He was struck by an excavator during waste removal operations, after which garbage continued to be dumped over his body while the excavator was diverting waste.
CCTV footage reviewed as part of the investigation shows the excavator hitting Ameen Mia, with work continuing at the site without interruption, police said.
The excavator operator, a 32-year-old Sri Lankan national, has been arrested under a court order in connection with the case.
Ameen Mia was reported missing to the police two days after the incident. Following an investigation, his body was discovered on 28 January at the WAMCO site.
Police said further information will be released as the investigation progresses. While providing updates on the case, authorities urged the public to prioritise information released by official agencies and to refrain from sharing unverified details that could cause misinformation or hinder the investigation.
