Managing Director and CEO of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, has stated that the development of Velana International Airport (VIA) is central to advancing the Government’s vision for the aviation and tourism sectors.

He made the remarks while speaking at the Velana Awards 2026 ceremony.

In his address, Shareef said the progress achieved at VIA reflects progress for the nation as a whole. He noted that each new service introduced at the airport and every additional route launched demonstrates tangible advancement, creating further opportunities for the tourism industry and the public.

Shareef stated the improvements brought about by the new passenger terminal, adding that positive changes are already visible following its introduction.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration in sustaining growth. Strong and lasting partnerships, he said, form the foundation of success in the sector. He noted that institutions and stakeholders working alongside MACL play a vital role in the airport’s continued development, describing the Velana Awards as an initiative to recognise and appreciate those contributions.

Shareef further stated that the Government sets new targets for the sector each year. Achieving those goals, he said, requires consistent effort as well as strengthened strategic partnerships, with all parties working together to maintain and enhance cooperation.

The MACL Managing Director also expressed appreciation to the President and the Government for their continued support in advancing the aviation and tourism sectors.
