The Non-Resident Ambassador of the Maldives to Bhutan, Shiuneen Rasheed, has formally presented her Letters of Credential to King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck during a ceremony held in Thimphu, marking the commencement of her official duties as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bhutan.

Following the presentation, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck received Ambassador Rasheed and extended his congratulations on her appointment. During the audience, the Ambassador conveyed greetings and best wishes from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to the King and the people of Bhutan, and expressed the Maldives’ appreciation for the longstanding ties between the two countries.

The Ambassador reaffirmed the Maldivian Government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Bhutan and enhancing cooperation in areas of shared interest, including engagement at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels. Discussions also focused on exploring opportunities to further deepen diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

As part of her visit, Ambassador Rasheed held separate meetings with Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade D.N. Dhungyel. The discussions centred on advancing Maldives–Bhutan relations and identifying avenues for cooperation in priority areas. She is also scheduled to meet Bhutan’s Minister for Industry, Commerce and Employment, Namgyal Dorji.

Ambassador Rasheed, who is currently serving as the Maldives’ High Commissioner to Bangladesh, will concurrently serve as Non-Resident Ambassador to Bhutan with residence in Dhaka. She was appointed to the post in February 2025.

The Maldives and Bhutan established diplomatic relations in 1984 and continue to maintain cordial ties, engaging regularly through regional and multilateral platforms on issues of mutual interest, including peace, stability and sustainable development.
