Deputy Leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC) and Member of Parliament for Baarah constituency, Ibrahim Shujau, has called on voters in Gaafu Alifu Villingili to elect development-oriented candidates in the upcoming Local Council Elections.
Shujau made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration of the PNC’s campaign in the Villingili constituency. He said the party’s aim is to work with capable council members to ensure that the Government’s development plans are effectively delivered to the people.
Referring to the planned airport in Villingili, Shujau assured residents that the project would move forward. He said the airport, pledged by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his presidential campaign, would bring significant benefits to the island and contribute to wider regional development.
He emphasised that while the Government is ready to proceed with the project, strong cooperation from the local council is essential. Shujau urged voters to elect a council that would actively support development initiatives and work closely with the Government to facilitate smooth implementation.
Shujau noted that the current Villingili Council has a majority aligned with the ruling party, adding that maintaining such alignment would help accelerate progress on the airport project and other development initiatives.
Addressing opposition criticism, he said PNC members in Parliament are fulfilling their constitutional duties and holding the Government accountable.
President Dr Muizzu pledged to develop an international airport in Villingili during a campaign visit to the island. The proposed project includes land reclamation in the Villingili lagoon and the launch of a major tourism development initiative alongside the airport.
In his Presidential Address 2026, the President reaffirmed that work on the Villingili airport would proceed as part of broader plans to expand airport infrastructure across the country.
Once completed, the Villingili International Airport will strengthen connectivity in Huvadhu Atoll. At present, three airports operate in the southern part of the atoll, while one serves the northern region. With the completion of both the Thinadhoo and Villingili airports, Huvadhoo Atoll, geographically recognised as the largest atoll in the world, will have two international airports, enhancing transport links and supporting economic growth in the region.
