All works under the second phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project have been completed, with the upgraded road now opened for public use.
The second phase covers a 250-metre stretch from the Local Market to the North Harbour in Malé. The segment has been asphalted and upgraded, while six metres of reclaimed land were added to widen the carriageway. Construction of the second phase began on 9 December 2025.
Before reopening the road, a tree-planting initiative was carried out to enhance the area’s greenery. State ministers, senior Government officials and employees of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) took part in the activity.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib stated the completion and reopening of the road will bring significant convenience to those who frequently use the area.
He noted that the stretch previously operated as a one-way road, resulting in various traffic difficulties. The Government widened the road and converted it into a two-way carriageway to address these concerns. The Minister expressed confidence that the upgrade will provide an effective solution to congestion in the area.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment is being implemented in multiple phases. The first phase, spanning from the official jetty zone to the Local Market, had already been completed and opened in December 2025.
The Government stated that the project is expected to ease congestion in the Malé Commercial Harbour area and significantly improve the movement of goods and passenger travel.
