President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that history and heritage remain central to safeguarding the Maldives’ sovereign independence.

In a post on X to mark National History Day, President Dr Muizzu said that as an independent and sovereign nation, one of the strongest foundations that will enable the country to endure and move forward in the years ahead is its history. The President highlighted that Maldivian history records that Maldivians have lived in this country for many centuries.

Reflecting on the significance of preserving the past, the President stated that a single sentence from a story of earlier times, an image from the era of forefathers, or even a visible remnant of an ancient relic can tell thousands of stories, offering countless lessons and wisdom about life.

National History Day is observed in the Maldives on February 27 each year. The date commemorates the passing of the country’s first historian, Al-Ghazi Hassan Thaajuddeen.
