President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Greater Malé Financial District Limited has been renamed Maldives Economic Gateway Development Limited, formalised through Presidential Decree No. 6/2026, published in the Government Gazette.

Established in 2025 as a wholly state-owned enterprise, the company was initially tasked with transforming the Maldives into an international financial hub. Its mandate covered initiatives in digital finance, digital banking, real estate, financial tourism, and the wider advancement of the financial sector.

The renaming reflects a resolution by the Board of Directors to realign the company’s identity with its expanded strategic objectives. These now focus on boosting national productivity and strengthening the financial services industry, particularly in digital financial services, digital real estate, and financial tourism, with the ultimate goal of positioning the Maldives as a leading international financial centre.

The Presidential Decree highlights the rebranding as a strategic step to enable the company to effectively manage and coordinate the development of the Ihavandhippolhu region in North Thiladhunmathi. This project aims to leverage the Maldives’ strategic geographic location while aligning with the Administration’s long-term economic vision for sustainable growth.
