President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stressed the importance of strengthening water security nationwide, stating that access to safe and reliable water services remains a vital issue, particularly for women and girls.
In a message celebrating World Water Day, the President noted that despite the Maldives being surrounded by seawater, ensuring a consistent supply of freshwater continues to be a national challenge. He said disruptions to water availability place additional pressure on households, with women often taking on greater responsibilities during such periods.
The President outlined ongoing efforts to improve water and sanitation systems across inhabited islands, including upgrades to desalination facilities, protection of natural freshwater sources, and the expansion of rainwater collection initiatives at the community level. He also highlighted the need to strengthen technical capacity, improve system management, and enhance preparedness to address issues such as salinity and supply disruptions.
He further emphasised the importance of greater inclusion of women in decision-making processes related to water management, noting that broader participation would support more effective and resilient community systems.
The President called for continued collaboration among state institutions, communities and development partners to improve water security and ensure equitable access to essential services. World Water Day is observed annually on 22 March, with this year’s theme focusing on water and gender.
