Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has announced plans to introduce two new visa categories for tourists in efforts to boost arrivals and strengthen the tourism sector.

The minister made the remarks during a press briefing held today by a special Cabinet committee formed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to assess the potential impacts of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The minister stated the decline in tourist arrivals from the region has affected the Maldives, noting that around 30 per cent of visitors typically transit through or originate from the Middle East.

Minister Thoriq said the Government is working with airlines and industry stakeholders to identify alternative travel routes and improve accessibility, while also focusing on measures to increase the length of stay of tourists. He noted that efforts are underway to facilitate longer stays beyond the standard 30-day visa period.

The minister revealed that plans include introducing special visa schemes targeting remote workers and content creators, which are expected to support the guesthouse sector by increasing occupancy rates.

In addition to visa reforms, the Government is pursuing initiatives to diversify tourism offerings, including the regulation of sports fishing and big-game fishing, as well as expanding opportunities in technical and recreational diving. Minister Thoriq also highlighted plans to further develop halal tourism and promote education and research tourism as part of efforts to broaden the industry’s appeal.
