A total of 111 children have been placed in family care under Government efforts to strengthen child protection, while 152 children remain under State custody, according to Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham.
Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office, the minister said ensuring children receive protection and support from birth remains a key priority, with particular focus on reducing risks linked to drug abuse and criminal environments. She noted that providing a safe and stable family environment for every child is a central policy of the Government.
Minister Dr Shiham said that under current initiatives, the approach to family placement has expanded beyond infants to include older children, with families now also taking in siblings together, marking a significant improvement in the ministry’s work. She added that since November 17, 2023, 111 children have been placed in family-based care, either with relatives or new families.
The minister further explained that before placing a child, efforts are first made to identify suitable caregivers within the child’s extended family, with alternative family arrangements sought if such options are not available.
She also noted that the number of children under State care has decreased from 164 at the start of the current Administration to 152 at present, with children accommodated in safe environments across the country and provided with training and opportunities aimed at supporting their integration into society.
