A panel discussion was held to mark Girls in ICT Day 2026, aimed at promoting opportunities in the digital economy and increasing the participation of women and girls in the sector.

The session was organised by MindCo in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare, and took place last Thursday.

Held under the theme “Girls Go Digital – Co-creating P6, P7, P8,” the session brought together women entrepreneurs, students, industry professionals, civil society representatives and key stakeholders in the digital sector.

Discussions focused on the role of women and girls in advancing the Maldives 2.0 agenda, particularly in expanding the digital economy. The session provided a platform for participants to share ideas, experiences and practical insights on increasing female participation in the sector.

The programme began with a presentation by MindCo, highlighting global and national trends in digital participation, including the growing role of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. The presentation also explored barriers faced by women and girls in entering the digital field, as well as opportunities to improve access and inclusion.

Two panel discussions were held as part of the session. The first focused on opportunities, challenges and collaborative efforts to enhance women’s participation in the digital economy. Discussions covered the current landscape of digital opportunities, ways to overcome barriers, and the importance of partnerships across sectors.

The second panel centred on the theme “AI for Development: Women shaping the digital future,” highlighting the contributions of women in technology, innovation and data-driven fields. Panellists shared insights on how emerging technologies are creating new opportunities for women and girls, and the skills and support systems needed to expand their participation.

An open discussion segment at the end of the session allowed participants to share views on the challenges faced by women and girls in entering and progressing in the digital sector.

MindCo said the ideas and recommendations gathered from the session would contribute to future initiatives under the Maldives 2.0 framework, with further efforts planned in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to strengthen women’s participation in the digital economy.
