President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed optimism that a permanent solution will be reached regarding visa-related issues faced by Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka, following discussions held during his State Visit.

Speaking at a gathering with the Maldivian community in Colombo, attended by a large number of Maldivians living in Sri Lanka, the President said resolving visa difficulties has been among the Administration’s key priorities. He noted that the matter was given special attention during the visit and discussions held with Sri Lankan authorities.

The President stated that assurances had been received from the Sri Lankan leadership regarding efforts to establish a long-term solution to the issue. He added that discussions during the visit reflected positive progress and reiterated appreciation for the cooperation extended by the Sri Lankan government.

During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu also spoke about plans to improve the Maldives Cultural Centre, commonly known as Sosun Villa, which serves as an educational and cultural hub for the Maldivian community in Sri Lanka. The President said he had closely reviewed the condition of the facility during his visit and noted that several areas require improvement, including the condition of the building, classroom facilities and services provided to the community.

He stated that efforts would be made to enhance the centre and improve the overall environment for Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka. The President also highlighted the recent introduction of passport and national identity card services in Sri Lanka, noting that such services are important given the large Maldivian community living there.

The President assured that the Government would continue working closely with Sri Lankan authorities, while also pursuing additional efforts to address concerns faced by Maldivians residing in the country.
