The Government has stated that Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) products have received strong support in Sri Lanka following their introduction to the Sri Lankan market.

MIFCO’s value-added fisheries products were showcased during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent State Visit to Sri Lanka as part of efforts to expand the company’s international market presence.

Speaking at the weekly Government press briefing on Thursday, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef said the President had requested a special quota to facilitate the entry of MIFCO products into the Sri Lankan market.

Shareef stated that opportunities for foreign investment and imports in certain sectors in Sri Lanka are limited, particularly in fisheries and canned products, making quota access essential for market entry.

He noted that the Government has now formally requested the required quota from Sri Lankan authorities.

Shareef further highlighted the strong demand for Maldivian fisheries products in Sri Lanka, stating that skipjack tuna is widely recognised there as “Maldivian fish,” reflecting the popularity and reputation of Maldivian seafood products among Sri Lankan consumers.

He added that the growing interest in MIFCO products demonstrates significant potential for expanding fisheries trade between the two countries.
