Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim has resigned as Deputy Speaker of Parliament ahead of a scheduled no-confidence vote.
The vote had been scheduled during Sunday's parliamentary sitting. However, Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that a resignation letter from Nazim had been received by the Parliament Secretariat before the matter was put to a vote.
The Speaker informed members that Nazim's resignation had taken effect in accordance with Article 82 of the Constitution, eliminating the need for Parliament to proceed with the removal motion.
The motion was submitted after the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group voted to remove Nazim from the Deputy Speaker post during a meeting held on 13 May.
A motion seeking his removal from the Deputy Speaker position was subsequently submitted to Parliament on 14 May with the signatures of 73 members.
Ahead of the scheduled vote, Parliament's General Committee had finalised procedures for the debate, allocating one hour for consideration of the motion. The committee had set aside 50 minutes for members to debate the matter and 10 minutes for Nazim to respond.
Nazim had served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament while representing the Dhiggaru constituency.
