The Elections Commission has dissolved The Democrats after the party failed to meet the minimum membership requirement stipulated under the Political Parties Act.

In a statement issued today, the Commission said the party did not attain the legally required membership threshold of 3,000 members within the period granted under Article 30 of the Act. Consequently, The Democrats has been dissolved with effect from today.

The Commission also decided to remove the party from the register of political parties.

The Democrats was founded by former President Mohamed Nasheed following his departure from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). However, the party did not reach the minimum membership threshold required to maintain its registration.

Nasheed subsequently rejoined the MDP and is currently contesting for the position of Chairperson.
