Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that disruptions affecting the clearance and transport of cargo from Sri Lanka's Colombo Port to the Maldives have been resolved.

The issue emerged earlier this year when delays at Colombo Port disrupted the movement of goods destined for the Maldives, resulting in a large number of containers being held at the Sri Lankan port. At the height of the disruption, approximately 4,200 containers were reported to be stranded in Colombo.

The delays raised concerns over the supply of goods to the Maldivian market, prompting the Government to work with relevant authorities and stakeholders to expedite the movement of cargo and minimise the impact on businesses and consumers.

Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed had previously stated that efforts were underway to accelerate the import of affected goods and ensure the continued availability of essential items in the Maldives.

MPL said the challenges affecting cargo movements from Colombo have now been resolved. The development comes as authorities continue monitoring global shipping and logistics networks, which have faced disruptions due to ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting international trade routes.

The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, together with other relevant agencies, continues to work to ensure the uninterrupted supply of goods to the Maldives and maintain the availability of essential commodities in the local market.
