The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and Maldives Police Service have held discussions with Singapore Police Force representatives to exchange information and experiences aimed at strengthening efforts to combat financial scams.

The Ministry of Homeland Security and Labour and Technology said the meeting was held on May 20 at the MMA as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the Maldives' response to financial and online scams.

The session brought together senior representatives from law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, telecommunications service providers, the Prosecutor General's Office and regulatory bodies. The discussions were facilitated by experts from Singapore's Anti-Scam Command, which is internationally recognised for its work in scam prevention and victim protection.

During the meeting, the Singaporean delegation shared experiences and best practices in tackling large-scale scam networks and reducing financial losses caused by fraudulent activities. Discussions focused on legal frameworks that enable swift intervention and the freezing of funds, as well as mechanisms for monitoring and reporting suspicious transactions across financial institutions.

Participants also explored ways to strengthen information-sharing between investigative agencies, regulators, telecommunications providers and digital platforms to improve the detection and prevention of scam-related activities.

The ministry said the Maldives Police Service continues to work closely with international partners to protect the public, businesses and the country's financial system from the growing threat posed by scams conducted through digital platforms.
