An expert team from China has arrived in the Maldives to conduct a preliminary survey essential for designing new roads in Malé and Villimalé.
This project, backed by a USD 130 million grant from China, follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent discussions in China to secure support for infrastructure development.
The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure confirmed that the team of Chinese experts met with technical officials from the ministry on Monday to discuss the project’s scope.
The team will undertake site surveys and data collection until November 21, with the data gathered being used to design the new road systems.
Most roads in Malé have suffered severe wear and frequent flooding, particularly during the rainy season, causing challenges for residents. In addition to road upgrades, the project includes a comprehensive stormwater management system aimed at addressing persistent waterlogging and improving travel conditions for the city’s residents.
