The Maldives has called on the international community to take decisive action to hold Israel accountable for violations of international law and end the culture of impunity in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The call was made during the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, where Maldives' Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Dr Salma Rasheed, delivered a national statement during the Interactive Dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.
In its statement, the Maldives strongly condemned ongoing military operations and restrictions on humanitarian assistance imposed on the Palestinian people and called on Israel to comply with its obligations under international law. The Maldives also urged the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure and called for safe, sustained and unhindered humanitarian access.
The Maldives further called on the international community to prevent further displacement of Palestinians and ensure effective remedies and rehabilitation for affected civilians. It also urged the creation of conditions conducive to a just, lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict, including respect for the rights of the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.
The statement concluded with the Maldives reiterating its support for ending Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and reaffirming its commitment to the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
