Maldivian fish exports increase 22.5% in May

Maldivian fish exports increased by 22.5 per cent in May compared with the same month last year, according to statistics released by Maldives Customs Service.

Customs figures show that fish exports totalled MVR 98 million during the month. The majority of exports consisted of canned tuna, frozen skipjack tuna and frozen yellowfin tuna. Canned tuna remained the country's largest fish export, generating MVR 38 million in export earnings during May, compared with MVR 31 million in April. Frozen skipjack tuna exports were valued at MVR 27 million, while frozen yellowfin tuna exports totalled MVR 18 million.

The United Kingdom was the largest export destination during the month, receiving goods worth MVR 36 million. Thailand followed with imports valued at MVR 35 million, while exports to France, India and Germany were valued at MVR 6 million, MVR 5 million and MVR 4 million respectively.
