The Maldives is currently exporting 63 tonnes of seaweed every month as part of the Government’s efforts to increase the economic value of the country’s marine resources, the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has revealed.
Speaking on a State media programme, State Minister Mohamed Muthalib said seaweed cultivation in the Maldives began as a pilot project by a private company in Baa Fehendhoo. What started with around 100 kilograms of cultivated seaweed has since developed into a thriving export business.
The State Minister said the company currently harvests about 63 tonnes of dried seaweed each month, equivalent to around five shipping containers of exports. He described the venture as a successful investment and noted that the Government is working to expand seaweed farming nationwide. He also said Maldivian investors have launched seaweed cultivation projects in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and that additional proposals have been submitted by parties interested in entering the sector.
To develop mariculture as a dedicated industry, the Government has designated five areas across the country for mariculture activities, including zones in Boduthiladhunmathi, Raa Atoll, Meemu Atoll and Thaa Atoll, as well as a lagoon located approximately two kilometres from Maniyafushi.
Seaweed farming is among the fastest-growing mariculture industries in Asia. At present, 98 per cent of the world's cultivated seaweed is produced in Asian countries, particularly China, Indonesia, South Korea and the Philippines.
Industry estimates place the global seaweed market at USD 17.14 billion in 2023, with its value expected to more than double by 2032, presenting significant opportunities for the Maldives to diversify and strengthen its blue economy.
