Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has returned to Malé after representing the Maldives at the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum 2026, where he called for greater international support to help vulnerable countries address the growing impacts of climate change.
During the forum, the Vice President highlighted the challenges facing low-lying island nations and stressed the need for increased climate financing, stronger international cooperation and practical solutions to support communities affected by climate mobility.
He stated climate mobility is already a reality for countries such as the Maldives and emphasised that efforts should focus on strengthening resilience and creating conditions that allow people to remain safely in their communities. Any movement of people linked to climate change, he said, should be planned, voluntary and carried out with dignity.
The Vice President also showcased the Maldives' ongoing investments in climate adaptation, including coastal protection projects, resilient infrastructure and the development of climate-resilient urban centres. He pointed to Hulhumalé and the planned Ras Malé development as examples of long-term efforts to enhance resilience while creating new economic opportunities.
At a separate panel discussion on sea-level rise, the Vice President highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of vulnerable communities and called for sustained investment in adaptation measures alongside stronger cooperation between governments and development partners.
The Vice President also took part in a series of high-level engagements on the sidelines of the forum, including discussions focused on advancing international cooperation on climate mobility and strengthening commitments to support countries most affected by climate change.
Throughout the forum, he reiterated the Maldives' support for people-centred approaches to climate mobility and called for greater access to financing and adaptation support for vulnerable nations.
