Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has stated that the physical works on the Government-funded outdoor volleyball court in Raa Dhuvaafaru have been completed.
MTCC said construction of the project has now been completed, adding that the new outdoor volleyball court has been developed to modern standards.
Practical works for the project commenced in December last year during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island.
With the completion of the new facility, Dhuvaafaru now has two volleyball courts. The additional court is expected to improve access to sports for residents, particularly during the evenings when demand for court space is highest.
The island is well known for its strong volleyball culture, and residents previously had to share a single court, limiting opportunities for recreational play and training. The new facility is expected to allow more people to participate in the sport.
Secretary General of the Dhuvaafaru Council, Ismail Ahmed, said the new court would also support youth development on the island. He noted that school students currently have access only to the indoor court at the school for training, and said the new outdoor facility would provide more opportunities for young players to develop their skills and help nurture future volleyball talent.
The Government has been implementing sports infrastructure projects across the Maldives as part of its efforts to promote a healthier population. In addition to developing courts and playing fields, work is also progressing on athletic tracks in various parts of the country, with many of these facilities already being actively used by the public.
