The Government has disbursed more than MVR 1.1 billion to fishermen under its 48-hour payment mechanism, Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has announced.
The mechanism, which guarantees payment to fishermen within 48 hours of delivering their catch, is one of the Government's key pledges.
Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office on Wednesday, Minister Shiyam said the policy has been in effect since December 2024. As of the end of June, a total of MVR 1.176 billion had been paid to fishermen under the scheme.
The Minister said the current Administration inherited approximately MVR 250 million in unpaid dues owed to fishermen when it took office in 2023. He said clearing the backlog was made a priority of the Government.
Minister Shiyam also reaffirmed the Government's commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability and continued development of the fisheries sector. He added that several initiatives are underway to improve financial and administrative services for fishermen, making it easier for them to access Government support.
