The Maldives Police Service has destroyed a large quantity of alcohol that had been kept in police custody in connection with various cases.

Police said the alcohol consisted of items seized in cases that had completed the investigation stage, as well as alcohol held by the Drug Enforcement Department, Tourist Police and Hulhumalé Police in cases where no suspect had been identified.

The destruction was carried out at Dhoonidhoo under the supervision of a committee established in accordance with regulations governing the disposal of alcohol and other items held in police custody.

The destroyed items included 364 branded bottles of alcohol, 78 PET bottles of alcohol, 25 cans of alcohol and seven other alcohol-related items. The items were linked to 13 incident reports and 21 investigated cases.

Police said the disposal operation was overseen by a team comprising an officer of inspector rank or above, along with four additional officers who had received the necessary training or expertise.
