First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called on business owners to take a leading role in protecting communities in the Maldives from the harmful effects of tobacco.

The appeal was made while addressing the official ceremony held in Meemu Mulah to mark World No Tobacco Day. In her remarks, the First Lady highlighted the dangers of tobacco use and encouraged the public to take steps to safeguard themselves from its harmful effects.

The First Lady said the health consequences of tobacco continue to affect generations and extend beyond smokers to those exposed to second-hand smoke. She noted that research has shown tobacco smoke also poses serious health risks to non-smokers.

Describing tobacco-related diseases as a leading cause of death among smokers, the First Lady warned that tobacco use can also have long-term health consequences for children exposed to tobacco smoke. She added that protecting one's health requires determination, strong values and a firm commitment to making healthy choices.

The First Lady also described tobacco as an unnecessary financial burden that undermines both health and quality of life, noting that it contributes to serious illnesses, including cancer, heart disease and lung disease.

Highlighting ongoing efforts by the Government and the World Health Organization (WHO) to build tobacco-free communities, the First Lady called on café and restaurant operators, as well as other business owners, to play an active role in protecting the public from the harmful effects of tobacco. She also encouraged tobacco users to renew their commitment to quitting.

Referring to this year's World No Tobacco Day theme, the First Lady noted that tobacco products continue to be promoted through indirect forms of advertising despite restrictions on conventional advertising. She urged the public to remain vigilant and not be influenced by such marketing practices.

World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on 31 May to raise awareness of the health risks associated with tobacco use and to encourage action to reduce tobacco consumption worldwide.
