President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Government's efforts to reduce tobacco use are being implemented through a holistic approach.

Responding to a question on proposed changes to tobacco import duties during a press briefing on Monday, the President said the Government's tobacco control policies form part of a long-term strategy developed with technical advice and based on relevant research.

He said the recent review of cigarette import duties is one element of that strategy, adding that the Government remains committed to reducing tobacco use and preventing more people from smoking.

The President said the generational tobacco ban was introduced to prevent young people from starting to smoke, while the ban on vaping was aimed at addressing the growing health risks associated with vape products. He added that cigarette import duties were increased following the vaping ban to discourage users from switching from vaping to cigarettes.

President Dr Muizzu said the Government is now preparing to launch a national programme in partnership with civil society organisations to help people quit smoking and strengthen tobacco control efforts across the country.

He added that amendments currently before Parliament also propose removing import duties on smoking cessation products to make them more affordable and accessible. Explaining the proposal, the President said many smokers have turned to alternative products that pose greater health risks, making it important to provide better support for those seeking to quit.

The President also announced plans to introduce national awards recognising individuals and organisations that make significant contributions to tobacco control. In addition, financial assistance will be provided to civil society organisations involved in smoking cessation programmes, while their work will be recognised at the national level.

President Dr Muizzu expressed confidence that the combined efforts of the Government, civil society organisations and the public would contribute to building a healthier society in the future.
