The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has commenced work to upgrade roads in Thaa Guraidhoo.

The project involves the development and asphalt paving of 10 roads across the island, covering a total length of 2.87 kilometres. It was awarded to RDC at a cost of MVR 69.229 million and is scheduled for completion within 730 days.

Funded by the Government, the project was inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his official visit to Guraidhoo last year. The implementation agreement was signed on 7 August 2025.

RDC said construction is now underway and will be carried out in accordance with the project schedule, with efforts to minimise inconvenience to residents during the implementation period.

The scope of the project includes topographic, geotechnical and hydrological surveys, along with road designs aimed at addressing flooding caused by heavy rainfall. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will also be completed as part of the project.

In addition to asphalt paving, the works include the installation of a stormwater drainage system, construction of sidewalks, preparation of tree pits for landscaping, and laying the aggregate base before surfacing the roads.

RDC said utility junctions along the roads will be adjusted to match the new road levels. The project will also include road markings, traffic signs, speed breakers and street lighting to enhance road safety.

Once completed, the upgraded road network is expected to significantly reduce flooding on Guraidhoo's roads during periods of heavy rainfall, while improving transport infrastructure and road safety for residents.
