Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib has announced that the detailed design for the redevelopment of roads in Malé and Vilimalé will incorporate measures to address flooding and other long-standing infrastructure issues.

The Minister made the remarks while speaking to the media after inspecting survey work being carried out ahead of the road design phase. He was accompanied by the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua, during the visit to the Artificial Beach area.

During the visit, survey team members briefed the minister and the ambassador on the progress of the preliminary works.

Minister Dr Muththalib said the detailed design will cover all roads in Malé and Vilimalé and will include engineering solutions to reduce flooding, particularly in areas that are frequently affected during heavy rainfall.

He added that the first phase of the project will begin with the redevelopment of Majeedhee Magu and roads leading to the hospital planned for Vilimalé. Roads in flood-prone areas, including the stretch in front of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Shaheed Ali Hingun, will also be prioritised during the construction phase.

The road redevelopment project is being implemented with grant assistance from the Chinese government.
