The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported 66 confirmed cases of measles in the Maldives so far this year, with the majority of recent infections detected in the Greater Malé Region.
In an update issued on Tuesday, the HPA said 44 cases were identified in the Greater Malé Area during the past week, bringing the total number of reported cases this year to 66.
The agency urged anyone experiencing fever and a red skin rash to seek medical attention without delay. It also advised people to wear a face mask when visiting healthcare facilities.
The HPA further urged individuals who undergo testing for suspected measles to remain in isolation until their test results are confirmed. People showing symptoms of the disease have also been advised to avoid public places to reduce the risk of transmission.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease caused by the measles virus. Although it most commonly affects children, people of all ages can contract the disease.
An infected person can spread the virus from four days before the appearance of the characteristic rash until four days afterwards. Health experts estimate that around 90 per cent of people who come into close contact with an infected individual and are not immune are likely to become infected.
The virus spreads through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, allowing the virus to enter the respiratory system of others nearby.
Children in the Maldives receive the MR vaccine at nine months of age as part of the national immunisation programme. The programme also includes the MMR vaccine, which provides protection against measles, mumps and rubella.
