First Lady and Chief Guide Sajidha Mohamed has said the Girl Guide movement plays a vital role in building resilient and responsible women who contribute to the nation's development.

Speaking at a ceremony held to mark National Girl Guide Day, the First Lady said nation-building begins with developing people and stressed the importance of empowering women alongside men.

She described the official recognition of National Girl Guide Day this year as a significant milestone, noting that it reflects the government's recognition of the movement's contributions over the past 75 years.

The First Lady highlighted the Girl Guide movement's long history in the Maldives, saying it has supported numerous national events since its establishment in the 1950s, including the visit of Queen Elizabeth II, the first foreign Head of State to visit the Maldives after it joined the United Nations.

She said the movement instils values such as discipline, responsibility, compassion and critical thinking, while helping young women develop leadership skills and a strong sense of civic duty.

First Lady also noted that Girl Guides have consistently played an important role during national events and emergencies, demonstrating their commitment to serving the country.

Reflecting on her experience as Chief Guide over the past two years, the First Lady said she has witnessed the movement's positive impact in strengthening communities by nurturing resilience, responsibility and leadership among young women.

She concluded by congratulating current and former members on National Girl Guide Day and wished the movement continued success.
