The Elections Commission has said all registered political parties, except two, have submitted their annual audit reports.
Under Article 41 of the Political Parties Act, parties are required to have their annual accounts audited by an auditor approved by the Auditor General and submit the report to the Elections Commission and Auditor General within 90 days of the end of each Gregorian year.
The deadline to submit political parties' audit reports for 2025 was 20 May 2026.
Four parties submitted their audit reports within the deadline. They are Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), People's National Congress (PNC), Jumhooree Party (JP), and People's National Front (PNF).
Adhaalath Party and Maldives National Party (MNP) have not submitted their audit reports so far. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted its audit report after the deadline, on June 4.
After a political party submits its audit report, the Auditor General is required to review the report and submit recommendations to the People's Majlis and the Elections Commission within one month.
The Elections Commission has the authority to fine parties by MVR50,000 if audit reports are not submitted within the required 90-day period.
If the commission decides to impose a fine, the party must be notified within 15 days. The fine must then be paid to the commission within one month from the date of notification.
If the fine is not paid, the unpaid amount will be deducted from the state budget funds allocated to the party the following year.
