More than 3,800 people have subscribed to PayPal since the global online payment service was launched in the Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, Mohamed Saeed said the introduction of PayPal marks an important step towards improving digital payment services and addressing challenges faced by businesses in accessing international financial transactions.

PayPal officially launched in the Maldives on 15 June through Ooredoo M-Faisaa, following the Government’s efforts to introduce modern digital payment solutions and expand access to global financial services.

The minister said businesses, particularly those engaged in international transactions, had faced difficulties in making and receiving overseas payments, adding that the Government is working to resolve these challenges through improved digital infrastructure.

He noted that PayPal will create new opportunities for freelancers, self-employed individuals and small businesses by allowing them to access international markets and receive payments from overseas customers more easily.

Through the integration of PayPal with Ooredoo M-Faisaa, users in the Maldives can now connect to a global payment network, strengthening the country’s digital economy and financial connectivity.
