A section of the redeveloped Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé will reopen to traffic next week following the completion of the second phase of the project, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced.
Speaking on the fourth episode of The Pulse podcast, the President said the section stretching from Izzuddin Jetty to Barceló Nasandhura would be opened after construction is completed. The redeveloped section includes a dedicated parking facility with space for 500 motorcycles.
President Dr Muizzu said the benefits of the project would extend beyond motorists using Boduthakurufaanu Magu, noting that traffic flow data from sections already reopened indicates the development has also eased congestion on surrounding roads.

Once this phase is completed, work will begin on upgrading the remaining stretch from Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to Rasfannu, which he described as the most deteriorated section of the road.
The President said completing the project would improve access to Malé's market area and commercial district while making travel easier across the city. He added that the road widening works would not affect harbour operations, with the reclaimed section being developed with quay walls on three sides to provide additional berthing space for vessels
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project involves widening one of Malé's busiest roads, alongside the installation of modern drainage infrastructure and upgraded traffic management measures to improve traffic flow. Construction on the 830-metre project began in August 2025 and includes 737 metres of sheet piling.
Sections around the Izzuddin Jetty and the local market have already reopened to traffic, with the latest section expected to open next week ahead, coinciding with the Maldives' Independence Day.
