The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with the Maldives to promote security and stability in the Indian Ocean region.

In a message on the Maldives' 61st Independence Day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended Independence Day greetings to the Maldivian people on behalf of the American people.

The message noted that this year celebrates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Maldives, and expressed hope that the two countries would further strengthen their partnership on shared priorities, including maritime security and maintaining stability in the Indian Ocean.

On behalf of the American people, he also conveyed his best wishes to the Maldivian people for a prosperous future.

The Maldives and the United States established diplomatic relations on 9 April 1966.
