President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Ambassador Thoriq Ibrahim to serve as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The nomination has been submitted to Parliament for consideration, in line with constitutional requirements and provisions under the Foreign Service Act for appointments to represent the Maldives at international organisations.

The matter has been referred to the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee for review. The appointment will be finalised following the committee’s evaluation and approval by a majority vote in Parliament.

Ambassador Thoriq Ibrahim previously served as the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy before being appointed as the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He has extensive experience in environmental policy and renewable energy, with his background expected to support the Maldives’ engagement in global renewable energy discussions.

IRENA is an intergovernmental organisation headquartered in Abu Dhabi, with 169 member states and the European Union as members. The Maldives has been a member of the organisation since its establishment and has actively promoted renewable energy transition and climate resilience through the platform.
