The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced a reduction in gate fees for private vehicles disposing of waste in cities and islands nationwide.

The revised charges, effective immediately, are aimed at reducing financial burdens and enhancing access to waste management services.

Under the new fee structure, the charge for private vehicles has been halved, dropping from MVR 212 per tonne to MVR 106 per tonne. WAMCO stated that this adjustment reflects notable changes in pricing for its services in urban and island areas.

In islands, households will now pay waste management fees through their electricity bills, streamlining the payment process.

This price reduction fulfils a presidential pledge by President Mohamed Muizzu to make waste management services more affordable and efficient.

WAMCO currently offers waste collection services in Malé, various islands, and resorts. The reduction in fees is expected to encourage greater participation in organised waste disposal, promoting cleaner communities and improved environmental sustainability.
