Uz. Ahmed Siddeeq, Minister of State for Homeland Security and Technology, expressed confidence that the proposed “Prevention of Gang Crimes Bill” in Parliament will greatly reduce crime in the Maldives.
Speaking on MMTV 's Bodu Khabaru programme, he stated that the bill aligns with the Government’s commitment to tackling gang-related violence and its associated societal issues.
The legislation is a significant aspect of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's vision for a safer Maldives, targeting gang violence as a critical step towards achieving national security and stability.
This bill seeks to provide a comprehensive framework to address various challenges, including drug abuse, violent crimes, and the accumulation of illicit wealth. These issues, often intertwined with gang activities, have been longstanding concerns for law enforcement and society at large.
The State Minister stated that the bill would empower the police with greater authority and resources to confront the complexities of gang-related crime.
By streamlining enforcement mechanisms, the proposed measures are expected to alleviate the operational challenges faced by law enforcement agencies, enabling more effective responses to criminal activities.
Beyond its immediate impact on crime rates, the bill is designed to address deeper societal problems that fuel gang involvement. The State Minister noted its potential to bring about lasting improvements in social stability, economic resilience, and public safety, thereby positively influencing the lives of the citizens.
