The Maldives is facing severe disruption following rainfall that has caused widespread flooding and extensive damage, particularly in Male' City.
The downpour, the heaviest in recent memory, has brought daily life to a standstill, leaving residents, businesses, and infrastructure struggling to cope.
Male' City was hit hardest, with streets submerged under water and homes inundated, forcing residents to evacuate or relocate to higher levels within their houses. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) pumped out over 30,569 tonnes of water from the city's streets, highlighting the scale of the crisis. Despite these efforts, damage to household items, including furniture and appliances, has been significant and, in many cases, irreparable.
The Maafannu area experienced some of the worst flooding, with nearly every home affected. Residents reported struggling to protect their belongings as water levels rose rapidly, leaving many to take refuge in overcrowded conditions on higher floors. Businesses in the city also suffered substantial losses. Shops reported damage to merchandise and critical documents, while the inflow of water forced many to close, further disrupting commerce and livelihoods.
Flooding has also taken a toll on vehicles, with garages across Male' inundated with motorcycles requiring urgent repairs. Dozens of vehicles were brought in for servicing in just one day, reflecting the widespread impact on transportation and mobility.
Beyond the capital, other regions of the Maldives have also been severely affected. Nilandhoo and Himmafushi are among the worst-hit islands, with reports of high tides and flooding causing significant destruction. The situation has compounded the challenges faced by residents, stretching local resources to their limits.
The Government has mobilised efforts to address the crisis, providing emergency relief to affected households. Temporary shelters and food aid have been distributed to 226 people from 36 rain-damaged homes, as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate further assistance.
As the Maldives begins to assess the full extent of the damage, the priority remains on providing immediate support to those affected and working toward recovery in the aftermath of this unprecedented event.
