The K Gulhi Island Council, alongside the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), has raised concerns over land shortages, infrastructure gaps, and resource limitations during a meeting with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on January 5 at the council secretariat.
The council expressed the critical need for land reclamation to address the demands of a growing population and an expanding tourism industry. Members stressed the importance of harbour expansion to manage the increasing marine traffic associated with tourism-related activities and ensure smooth vessel operations.
Healthcare services were also a prominent topic, with the council calling for additional staff and improved laboratory facilities at the island’s Health Centre to meet rising demands from the local community.
Further concerns were raised regarding the insufficient space at the council’s current offices. In response, President Dr Muizzu pledged to provide new premises for the council. Cabinet ministers accompanying the President discussed ongoing development initiatives aimed at addressing issues raised during the meeting.
The Women’s Development Committee echoed the council’s priorities, emphasising the challenges posed by land scarcity and budgetary constraints. They urged swift and decisive action to ensure the island’s development remains on track.
President Dr Muizzu assured the island’s leadership that their concerns had been noted and would be incorporated into the Administration’s development strategy.
