The Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, has announced plans to revitalise Maldivian, with the objective of enhancing the national carrier’s efficiency and profitability.
This ambitious effort seeks to transform the airline into a sustainable and profitable operation while addressing long-standing challenges resulting from previous policies.
Speaking at the inauguration of the airline’s first wide-body aircraft, the Minister discussed various opportunities to bolster the airline’s growth and operations. He spoke of the significant potential of leveraging the Maldives’ flourishing tourism sector to expand into long-haul routes and tap into new international destinations.
However, the Minister emphasised that mismanagement in recent years has posed a major obstacle to the airline’s success. Although Maldivian achieved profitability and operational efficiency by 2018, subsequent policies have reportedly undermined its performance.
Among the operational challenges identified were delays in seaplane contracts, the underutilisation of a high-performing Airbus acquired in 2022, and the repurposing of spare parts from Dash 1 boats, which led to four boats becoming non-operational. These inefficiencies, coupled with substantial loans, have placed considerable financial strain on the airline.
To address these pressing issues, the Minister stated that the current Administration is implementing decisive measures. Initiatives include clearing the airline’s debts, modernising its operations, and expanding its fleet. While acknowledging the risks and costs associated with running an airline, he stressed the Government’s belief in Maldivian’s potential as a driver of economic growth for the country.
The introduction of a wide-body aircraft for the national airline, the Minister noted, represents the fulfilment of both a presidential promise and the aspirations of many within the field. He expressed confidence that this development would increase tourist arrivals, boost seaplane and domestic flight operations, and deliver significant economic benefits to the nation.
Island Aviation Services Limited, the operator of Maldivian, was established in 2000. With the addition of the new wide-body aircraft, the airline’s fleet now comprises 25 aircraft. Previously, it operated a fleet of 24 smaller aircraft without wide-body capabilities.
