The Government is set to introduce significant amendments to the Employment Act and Decentralisation Act in the upcoming Parliament session, aimed at strengthening the role and benefits of Women’s Development Committees (WDC).

The announcement was made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Vaadhoo Island in Huvadhu Atoll, where he addressed residents and outlined the Government’s commitment to empowering women.

The proposed amendments seek to address longstanding challenges faced by WDCs, including the conversion of allowances into formal salaries. Additionally, they aim to improve provisions related to Ramadan benefits, maternity leave, and access to bank loans. According to the President, these changes reflect a direct response to feedback received from WDCs across the country over the past year.

One significant change will see Ramadan allowances transformed into a paid format, similar to those of salaried employees, beginning next Ramadan. These adjustments will not necessitate full-time work, ensuring flexibility for committee members while aligning with existing principles.

Highlighting the vital role of women in community development, the President reiterated its dedication to offering comprehensive support to WDCs. He also emphasised that women play a central role in driving development on each island and stressed the importance of acknowledging their contributions while ensuring equal opportunities for both men and women.

In addition to enhancing WDC support, the Government is pursuing broader policies to promote women in leadership. Plans include increasing female representation in corporate ownership and top management positions. For the first time, institutions traditionally led by men will see women in leadership roles at the national level.
