President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to sign an agreement with a Chinese company in February to establish a fish factory in Gaafu Dhaalu Fiyoari.

Speaking to residents during his ongoing tour of Huvadhu Atoll islands today, President Dr Muizzu addressed the longstanding challenges faced by local fishermen who currently must make journeys to Kooddoo to weigh their catch.

The President emphasised his commitment to making only those promises he is certain can be fulfilled, announcing that construction work on the 3,000-tonne fish processing facility will commence within two weeks of signing the agreement with the Chinese firm.

The state-of-the-art facility will feature a cannery capable of processing 100 tonnes of fish daily, alongside a 3,000-tonne cold storage facility and a 50-tonne ice plant.

Responding to concerns raised by local authorities, the President outlined additional development plans for the island. These include the reconstruction of the school hall, and the establishment of a new multipurpose hall complete with classrooms and a laboratory within the year.

The President also addressed the community's banking needs, pledging to fulfill his promise of installing an ATM on the island. He further assured residents that the waste management system would be improved, with both projects prioritised under the 2025 budget.
