The Parliament (People’s Majlis) has scheduled two extraordinary sittings this month.

According to Parliament's Majority Leader Ibrahim Falah, who represents the Inguraidhoo constituency, the sittings are slated for the 16th and 20th of this month, with a primary focus on appointing members to independent institutions alongside other pressing matters.

The timing is particularly crucial as the appointments to both the Elections Commission and Broadcasting Commission remained pending at the conclusion of the regular parliamentary session. Of particular urgency is the Elections Commission appointment, which must be fulfilled within a 60-day window of the position becoming vacant – a deadline that would lapse before Parliament's next regular session commences.

The Parliament is currently in recess following the conclusion of its final sitting of 2024. In accordance with parliamentary procedures, the first sitting of the year is scheduled to commence on the 1st of February.
