The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a stern warning to those extracting sand using machinery without preparing a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.

In a statement, EPA revealed that it has been receiving an increasing number of complaints regarding large-scale sand mining operations in areas designated for essential purposes. The agency noted that sand is being extracted for commercial purposes, contravening established regulations.

As per regualtions, an EIA report must be prepared to evaluate the environmental impact of sand mining in a specific area. This process requires consultation with the relevant atoll council and local authorities to ensure compliance and mitigate environmental harm.

EPA urged individuals and businesses involved in sand extraction to adhere to these guidelines and warned that action would be taken against violators. The agency emphasised the need for sustainable practices to prevent environmental degradation and maintain the ecological balance.
