President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a series of initiatives to tackle persistent challenges in Gaafu Alif Dhevvadhoo, focusing on coastal erosion, harbour constraints, and waste management.
During his visit to the island on January 8, 2025, as part of a broader tour of Huvadhoo Atoll, the President met with residents and assured them that these issues would be prioritised in the 2025 budget.
To address coastal erosion, the President called for coordinated efforts between the Dhevvadhoo Council and the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure to develop an integrated solution. He pledged Government support for resolving erosion, expanding harbour facilities, and introducing sustainable waste management systems. These improvements aim to benefit the entire community, particularly the fishing sector.
The President also announced plans to revitalise the island's non-operational ice plant, dormant for three years, and to procure an additional unit through the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. This move is intended to enhance fishing activities and support the local economy.
In healthcare, plans include upgrading the Dhevvadhoo Health Centre with paediatric and X-ray services, as well as expanding sea ambulance services for geographically isolated areas. On the education front, the President committed to building a multipurpose hall for the school, offering much-needed facilities for academic and community events.
Sports and recreation were also highlighted, with assurances to complete the football pitch with sub-base and turf, construct a volleyball court, and deliver an outdoor gym under the State Trading Organisation’s CSR programme. These initiatives aim to promote health and strengthen community engagement.
President Dr Muizzu encouraged residents to remain optimistic and reiterated his Administration's commitment to addressing their concerns. He stressed that Government priorities are guided by the needs of the people, with efforts directed towards achieving meaningful progress across key sectors.
