Police report over 73,000 vehicle inspections in 2024 road safety efforts

The Maldives Police Service inspected a total of 73,953 vehicles in 2024 as part of ongoing operations to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and enhance road safety.

According to traffic and towing statistics, 66,347 individuals were issued advisory notices in 2024, while 7,606 were handed violation slips for various traffic offences.

The statistics further reveals that 2,138 drivers were caught operating vehicles without a valid licence. Of these cases, 2,005 involved two-wheelers, while 133 involved four-wheelers. Additionally, 293 incidents of dangerous driving were recorded, including 271 cases involving two-wheelers and 22 involving four-wheelers, underscoring a persistent concern for road safety.

The Police also reported that 15,514 vehicles were towed during the year, including 11,645 motorcycles, 2,567 cars, 478 pickups, 369 vans, and 87 trucks. Of these, 13,562 vehicles were returned to their owners, while 546 were destroyed.

In a statement, the Maldives Police Service highlighted that dangerous road accidents remain a significant concern and reaffirmed its commitment to using all available resources to reduce life-threatening incidents. Special attention was given to promoting public awareness and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations to create safer roads for everyone.
