The Ministry of Social and Family Development, in collaboration with Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation Limited (FDC), has unveiled the ‘Empowerment Hub,’ a new initiative aimed at creating an inclusive environment for persons with disabilities in the Maldives.
Targeting individuals aged 18 to 40, the hub is designed to assist persons with disabilities in transitioning into community life after completing their schooling. The initiative focuses on fostering autonomy, building skills, and promoting meaningful participation in society.
The agreement for the project was formalised by Minister of State Ahmed Athif on behalf of the Ministry of Social and Family Development, while FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel represented the corporation.
Set to open later this year in Hulhumalé Phase 2, the facility will span 5,500 square feet and include a variety of resources to support skill development and social interaction. Key features include an inclusive café offering hospitality and culinary training, a public shop showcasing products created by persons with disabilities, and three workshop spaces for tailored programmes.
The hub will also house a computer and information technology training centre, alongside dedicated spaces such as an activity room and a multimedia room, designed to encourage social engagement and recreational activities.
The initiative emphasises collaboration with civil society, care providers, and individuals with disabilities to ensure its success. To further community involvement, the Ministry plans to host discussions and informational sessions about the project in the coming months
